How the numbering works

Numbers follow the order of debut in games given first-class status by New Zealand Rugby. Players debuting in the same starting team are numbered alphabetically by surname, followed by any debutants off the bench.

Special cases

John Corbett, Tom Learmont, George Dansey and Robert Todd are numbered for combined-team and South Island games in 1904 and 1905, when West Coast had no first-class games of its own. Ron Hibbs is numbered for his 1969 game with a combined West Coast-Buller team.

No West Coast games were played from 1898 to 1904, or in 2020.

Still to confirm

No. 449 James A Bradley: the source list numbers two players 448 and skips 449. Spellings: George W Oliver (No. 2) and George W Olliver (No. 142), Tamatautonu Faitontonu (No. 1393) and Tama and Tevita Faitotonu (Nos. 1443 and 1444), Joe Simspson-Smith (No. 1437). Edward Andrews and Douglas Lines show a debut date of 17 Mar 1948, listed between June and July games.
