Coast lose tough game to Wairarapa-Bush
Wairarapa-Bush took the spoils against a gallant West Coast outfit in round four of the Bunnings Heartland Rugby Championship on Saturday.
In a tight match-up between the two teams, West Coast had a slender 14-12 lead at half-time, but a fired-up Wairarapa Bush came out a different team in the second half and kept Coast scoreless for the next 40 minutes while they ran in two second-half tries to win a classic game by 24-14.
COAST SCHOOLS WIN DIVISION 2 RUGBY TITLE
The West Coast Combined High School U15 rugby team has returned home from the Rural Livestock South Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Oamaru (Aug 25–27) with the Division 2 title after an outstanding three days of rugby.
Made up of players from John Paul II High School, Greymouth High School, Westland High School, and South Westland Area School, the team faced strong opposition from across the South Island in a 22-team competition.
Legacy Fund launches to boost rugby's future generations
New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has today opened applications to the Legacy Fund, designed to support projects which will have an intergenerational impact on the game.
The Legacy Fund will distribute the annual earnings on a $60m perpetual fund held by New Zealand Rugby.
Coast win Heartland Opener
West Coast took on the defending Lochore Cup champions King Country on Greymouth on Saturday for a win in the season opener of the Bunnings Warehouse Heartland Rugby Championship.
In a repeat of last year's final, the Coast hosts had a slim 12-11 half-time lead and by the end of the game had won by an impressive 38-18, after a second half blitz of fantastic running rugby.
West Coast put 50 on Buller
West Coast turned on the sunshine and the scoreboard on Saturday, running out easy winners 68-7 over neighbours and long-time rivals Buller in a pre-season Heartland Rugby Championship game.
Coast led 33-0 at half-time and finished with 10 tries over the Westport visitors.
Wests win back-to-back titles
Wests and Kiwi met again in the Taylorville-Wallsend Cup West Coast club final in front of a huge crowd at John Sturgeon Park on Saturday. In a game that had almost everything going on, Kiwi were ahead by 12-10 at the break, but at full-time it was Wests who had their noses in front by two points, winning 26-24.
Wests have now won back-to-back titles after their stunning win last year.
Wests Rugby Football Club book another final verses Kiwi
Wests met South Westland in a West Coast club rugby semi-final at Cass Square on Saturday and ran away with the game in the first half with an impressive 43-0 lead.
South Westland put in a valiant effort for the second 40 through stellar defensive work, but it was Wests who conquered on their home soil, winning 55-0. Read more…
